What the letter asks Alaska to do
  1. Repeal the gun industry's special protection in Alaska law (Alaska Stat. § 09.65.155), so manufacturers and sellers can be held accountable in court like any other business.
  2. Pass a firearm industry responsibility law that holds manufacturers and sellers liable when their marketing or sales practices put Alaska's children at risk.
  3. Require that handguns sold in Alaska include technology that keeps them from firing in the hands of a child or any other unauthorized user, as that technology becomes available.
  4. Pass a child access prevention law that holds adults responsible when they leave a loaded gun where a child can reach it. Even Texas and Florida have one.
  5. Require a background check on every gun sale, including sales at gun shows and online. Until then, suspend gun shows that allow guns to change hands without one.
  6. Pass an extreme risk law so families and police can ask a judge to temporarily remove guns from someone in crisis, before a child is hurt.
  7. To our members of Congress: repeal the federal Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act, which gives the gun industry an immunity from lawsuits that no other industry enjoys.
